The jealous goddesses demonstrate the power of destruction on innocent victims. An example in which a goddess punishes an unknowing victim because of her jealousy occurs when Hera turned Io into a cow. The reason Hera did so was because she suspected Zeus of having an affair with her, which of course, he was. In the book, it says, “ He turned in Io reluctantly over to his wife and Hera knew very well how to keep her away from him” (Hamilton 98).

Women, in both Greek and Mesopotamian mythology, are often symbolic of temptation, mischief and trouble. Before women first stepped onto the earth, men lived peaceful and healthy lives. The stories of Pandora and Ishtar serve as two prime examples of women depicted as the sources of punishment, trickery, or otherwise general immortality. When Zeus sent Pandora to earth, he had only vengeful punishment in mind. While Pandora was beautiful and gifted, she was also very deceitful, which was a fitting attribute considering Zeus’s plan to trick Epimetheus into his own punishment.
Hawthorne indicates that Parris is overreacting to the scheduled hanging of Rebecca and proctor because “at every execution [he has] seen naught but high satisfaction in the town.” What would happen to a townsperson who protested the hangings or appeared dissatisfied in any way with the courts proceedings and decisions would without a doubt be thought to be associated with the devil. The juxtaposition between the titles afforded to these characters offers a clue to how Virgil views them: Juno is simply a hysterical wife while Jupiter is a powerful leader. Jupiter could halt Juno’s shenanigans if he wanted, as he holds a more prominent position than she does, but instead he dismisses her as petty and frivolous—striving in vain to thwart
the goddess reaches / Aeolia…’Hammer your friends to fury / and ruin their swamped ships…” (Book I, 75-101). The imagery of Juno “burning, pondering” brings about a symbolism of her emotions as an uncontrolled fire that pushes her to hinder Rome’s imperial future. Virgil then presents a male force that is able to put out the fire he draws up for Juno as Neptune answers Aeneas’ prayers and calms the storm. This is followed by the
