The Importance of Hope: The Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian The Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian shows the importance of hope throughout the entire novel. The author states how significant hope really is, and how it helps us have courage in even the toughest situations. From the start to the end of the novel, you can see how the members of the reservation lack hope. Nothing for the community ever goes right, so it seems they have just given up and faced reality. Having hope is one of the most essential things anyone can have, even if it is difficult. At the beginning of the novel, Arnold perceives hope as a waste of time. He has every reason to believe this, for example, his parents “dreamed about being something other than poor, but never got the chance to be anything” (Alexie 11). She says in a letter that “it was a dream come true” (Alexie 100). Mary is finally content with her life, happy that she is no longer living in her parents’ basement being miserable. Although, this doesn’t last long for her. Mary dies, right after she starts regaining her hope and was untroubled for once in her life. This illustrates the loss of opportunities and dreams that everyone in the reservation has to deal with on a daily basis, therefore, is why this community does not believe in having hope. I can relate to Arnold and how he feels that having hope is nothing but a waste of time. It is hard to stay hopeful during tough situations, but I have found that having hope has impacted my life in a positive way. When you stay hopeful, it is much easier to stay courageous.
