The history of Latinos in Utah is complex, but it is also a history that is neither well represented in mainstream recounting nor well recognized in the mainstream understanding of Utah’s past. Convoluted interactions among Native Americans, Spaniards, French, Mexicans, Anglos, and others shaped the story of Utah. Awareness of the long presence of Hispanics in Utah is essential to understanding the history of the state. This volume is an attempt to piece together that history through photos and oral histories.
The video “Latino Americans: Foreigners in their Native Land” it shows the different experiences from these different cultures, races and government system. I can see how Mexican people and Native Americans both had different issues and main conflicts, which it leads to the dominion of the Anglo or European settlements in the United States. Leading to the facts that they brought a religious and government system that dominate these cultures by making them work for them. These mission settlements had the idea to bring peace and opportunities to everyone but they only create a system that controls these people lives in one way or the other. In New Mexico with the initiation of the railroad system it also brought cattle ranchers that begin to take the lands away from Mexicans. Realizing they were losing their land the Mexicans fought back.
Misrepresentation of Minorities in Mass Media; Latinos Latinos accounted for only 4.9% of the characters across 100 top Hollywood films in 2013. From the beginning, Hollywood had always been dominated by white men and women. However, as time progressed there was a very slight change in cultural and ethnic diversity. Though it is more likely now than ever to find a latino or latina in a Hollywood film, their roles are often small, stereotypical, and almost entirely unimportant. As if it wasn’t hard enough to get any role in any Hollywood film regardless of ethnicity, Latinos have to endure playing a harshly demeaning role.
Hispanics overcoming challenges by: Tejas Kar Many people from all over the world have overcome many challenges. For example, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandala, Abraham Lincoln and minor people like Rosa Parks. Many other people, like Hispanics have also overcome a wide varied of challenges.
Latinos immigrants has been able to overcome the criminogenic effects due to collective efficacy. Collective Efficacy is when an urban neighborhood takes matter into there own hands. So if something was to happen within the neighborhood being misdemeanors, they will take care of it. These neighborhood has social control they are able to control the residents in order for it not to be any chaos. In the PowerPoint it stated, “If the neighbors trust each other and step in to enact informal control, they have ‘collective efficacy’ which may override the elements of social disorganization” (Leboratto 2017).

The Hispanic community encounters various barriers to treatment that lead them to not seek, drop out, or have less effective outcomes than other social groups when receiving treatment for substance use. Therefore, the access of treatment for Hispanic immigrants, documented or undocumented must improve. This section of the paper will introduce some ideas that research provides on how to improve access of treatment for the Hispanic community. One aspect that needs to improve is to increase the body of research about this population. Research addressing various types of interventions that are effective with the Hispanic population can be beneficial to develop a more effective treatment approach for substance use disorder in the Hispanic community (Alvarez et al. 2007; Amaro et al., 2006).
Mexican Leadership Within the past decade there has been an increase in Latino representation that has jumped started the advocacy of Latino related issues all across the nation. Prior to this influx of representation, Latino politics was extremely limited to only local government. In today’s society, Latino politics is a main issue on both the Republican and Democratic platform. Even though this has been a tremendous milestone to reach, Latinos continue to be underrepresented in all forms of government.
The increasing numbers of Latino youth who obtain college degrees are become active in politics, with the biggest trend of Latino population is youth and growth we can only hope for even more support in politics. “For the first time ever, Latinos accounted for one in ten votes cast nationwide in the presidential election, and Obama recorded the highest ever vote total for any presidential candidate among Latinos, at 75%” (Barreto and Segura 145). The Latino vote is becoming a crucial element to politics because of their size in population. . “While turnout declined nationally from 2008 to 2012 (by 2%), among Latinos there was a 28% increase in votes cast in 2012 (from 9.7 million to 12.5 million) and Obama further increased his vote share among Latinos in 2012 compared to 2008” (Barreto and Segura 145). One of my biggest supporters are my parents. Their support and conviction about the worth of acquiring an education has shaped my beliefs, values and ambition to continue higher education and use my career in a progressive way to give back to my community. Unfortunately, not everyone had the same support system like I did. Many of my peers struggled whether to continue their education or financially support their family. This is a very dangerous reality within the Latino community that needs to be addressed and resolved immediately.
Hispanic Americans, or Latinos, are a very large and diverse ethnic group in the U.S. Altogether, they make up about 44 million people or 15% of America’s population. Individuals who make up this category can identify with various nationalities and backgrounds. However, the 2010 U.S Census – as stated in the textbook -- reported that 75% of its total Latino respondents identified being of Mexican, Puerto Rican, or Cuban origin. According to the lecture notes, 65% of Hispanics claim to be Mexican Americans, while 8.5% are Puerto Ricans and another 3.5% are Cuban Americans.
According to the CDC Hispanics of Mexican origin make up approximately 17 percent of the population in the United States. They are the one of the largest cultural populations in U.S. has risen dramatically over last four decades. There are a variety of reason that lead to health disparities for the Hispanic community these reasons then lead to the individuals not obtaining healthcare. First, it was reported by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2012 that 29.1 percent of the Hispanic do not have health insurance. This usually prevents the majority of Hispanic people from receiving health care.
Hispanic or Latino face physical, psychological and social discrimination especially Latino LGBT communities which are most suppressed one, due to their gender and sexual identity. This problem persists since longtime. Discrimination is born when one feels that his identity is different from others and superior. They are discriminated economically, socially and psychologically. LGBT face discrimination not only at work place but also at home and schools.
