Around 300 and 1400 BCE Africa had many achievements, but then the Europeans showed up and mess everything up. Acording to documents one and eight, it shows many trade routes that had been developed throughout Africa and now it is an important international trading center. In documents two and three wealth was an important thing in Africa that had contributed to many things that was used in so many ways in Africa. In documents two, four, five, six, seven, and eight there were many rulers and travelers throughout Africa that had many influences on Africa achievements, that had eventually gone downhill.
Throughout history, Africa has not only been whitewashed and demonized, but also has been belittled, diminished, and dismissed entirely because of human ignorance. Monsters and human beasts were rumored to roam Africa due to false information and misunderstandings of early {European} explorers. Oxford historian Hugh Trevor-Roper even went as far as to say that Africa has nothing to offer but darkness before European conquest and exploitation, making Africa not respected enough to study. This statement is racist, unenlightened, and undeviatingly inaccurate and steamed solely off of personal bias and takes away all credibility of Trevor-Roper, rightfully so. The Europeans did not count Africans as civilized humans. They wanted to imperialise Africa to help. Document F states, “your new caught, sullen peoples, half devil and half child…” as a description of the African people. Every single country in Europe believed that African countries were extremely uncivilized “animals”.
It became so bad that the Europeans did not treat the Africans as real people. The Europeans thought they were better because of their race so they enforced their power by taking away essential human rights. In Basil Davidson’s video, “Different but Equal”, Davidson examines ancient Africa, and how Africans were perceived in ancient and modern times. Davidson discusses pre-colonized Africa and its history, and how racism prevailed in the past and in modern day. By discussing early civilizations, as well as modern day perspectives, Davidson allows the viewer to have expansive information on how individuals view Africans and their culture. In Davidson’s video, he discusses how people in the past have viewed Africa and African culture, and how that relates to our perception of Africa in modern times.
Africa traded slaves for very profitable goods and their kingdoms became powerful. Local Africans traded whatever slaves they could get their hands on, which in the beginning were criminals, those in debt or adulterers. As time went by and Africans saw just how much success they had with slave trade they started to resort to harmful methods. African coastal kingdoms would purposely start wars to gain slaves. This resulted in innocent Africans getting enslaved.
All of these attributes that made the Africans different from the Europeans, were used as tools to justify their mistreatment. If someone is looked at as ugly or inhuman, they do not deserve to be treated as human. If someone doesn’t deserve to be treated as human, it does not rest on the conscience of the oppressors when they are unjust toward

The racial prejudice by such scholars and the negative portrayal found their way to the public and thus lead to even more negative views. In the 17th century, an argument emerged, characterizing Africa as a place of famine, war, disease and poverty. This argument was further used by anti-abolitionists to make slavery in foreign countries a positive escape. Colonialism in Africa went even further to promote the negative portrayal of Africa and the colonial powers convinced themselves that they were redeeming “the land of fantastical beats and cannibals, slaves and backward races.”
