Throughout our lives, we have conquered many obstacles; our actions are influenced by others, making us who we are. Perseus faced the obstacle of accomplishing the life-risking task of slaying Medusa while trying not to freeze into stone. Hannah Herbst learns to make ocean water able to produce electricity to help turn fresh water into more efficient energy for the basic necessities of life. These characters have faced turmoil and uncertainty throughout their lives, but are motivated by others to push through.
Each of these characters have similarities and differences in how they complete their goals and overcome their obstacles. Both Perseus and Hannah Herbst were given a task to complete in order to help the greater good. For example, Perseus was given a task by Athene to slay Medusa and bring back her head while trying not to be frozen. Perseus accomplished this task to benefit the people

For example, Perseus risks his own life to obtain fame. Athene tells him “So you will bring it safely back to me, and win to yourself renown, and a place among the heroes who feast with the Immortals upon the peak where no winds blow.” Without hesitation “Then he thought of Medusa and the renown before him, and he leapt into the empty air.” Perseus risks his life to obtain fame. On the contrary, Hannah was not putting her life at risk. She wouldn’t die if she lost the 2015 Discovery contest. Hannah’s commission wasn’t going to be life-threatening to her because she just worked on her BEACON project. Although others may have suffered if she failed, the only suffering she may have had was the frustration of losing. The challenges that Hannah has undertaken are nowhere near as risky as losing her own life. Unlike Perseus, young Hannah has not had to face the difficulty of survival, for she was too busy putting others wants and needs before her
