12th April, 2023 Introduction
I have learned about the Greek civilization in details from this week's reading materials, and there are so many interesting things, such as governmental processes and democratic systems of ancient Greek civilization. How were the two city-states similar in their governmental structures? How did they differ?
One of the similarities between Athens and Sparta in governmental structures is that both cities allowed their people to participate in public life and make decisions in the Assembly Hall with the eligible people, although they had age restrictions (Brand, 2010). Only adult men are eligible, and both Athens and Sparta do not allow women or slaves (Brand, 2010).
The differences in governmental structures are that Athens used democratic systems and Sparta used oligarchic systems (Diffen, n.d.). Sparta’s governmental structure is composed of mandatory military service from age 7 to 60, whereas Athens did not use a military-based system and citizens are required to be part of the military only for two years (Diffen, n.d.). Moreover, Sparta allowed education for girls, which Athenians did not allow (Diffen, n.d.).
