Culture describes how a group of people distinguishes the world; such as their differences in beliefs, ideas, experiences and behaviors (Snowman & McCown, 2015). In the U.S, students vary in their cultural background, and for this reason, culturally diversity among students is an essential feature of the classroom. A culturally competent teacher accepts that every student has their own cultural identity, does not set expectations based on their student’s religion, gender and culture and recognizes any communication barriers there might be (Snowman & McCown, 2015). Culturally competent teaching, promoted in the classroom will help students gain self-acceptance and have respect other.
Teachers that are culturally relevant tend to continuously communicate high expectations to all students, monitor their progress and give practical feedback (Snowman & McCown, 2015). These culturally relevant teachers also use significant instructional tactics; they encourage peer tutoring amongst their students, and they teach students how to work in small diverse group (Snowman & McCown, 2015). Also, educators that are culturally relevant have attitudes and dispositions that demonstrates teachers who are unbiased against students of different culture, gender, or race. These teachers are also able to understand others perspectives and have respect for all culture (Snowman & McCown, 2015).
