“Things are rough all over,” The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, portrays this theme many times in the 1967 novel. The story was brought to theater in 1983 and showed the rough and tumble world of high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Both the book and the movie tell the compelling story of Ponyboy Curtis. Reading the novel and watching the movie are two different experiences. Therefore, Ponyboy’s story is portrayed differently in these two forms of storytelling. There are some huge differences in the themes of the book and movie. For example, the book repeatedly portrays the theme that it’s rough all over by telling stories of the characters lives. However, while the movie does portray this theme, it is less often and not in such a compelling way.
