In sports, how do teams increase fan interest if their team is having a failing season? Many teams incorporate promotions into their schedule to increase the attendance for the games they are anticipating will not draw as much fan interest. These “promotions attract the attention of the target audience and then create involvement by having consumers point and click on the information they find of interest” (Shank & Lyberger, 2014, p. 405). What are certain pitfalls that are associated with these promotions? Although they bear some minor similarities, the difference between the promotional schedules of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs are clear. Louis Cardinals, they have a wide variety of promotional give-a-ways spread throughout there season. These promotional games include the give-a-way of such items as magnets, jerseys, bobblehead nights, as well as fireworks displays during the season. The one aspect that professional organizations such as the Cardinals share with minor league teams is that their promotional give-a-ways are sponsored by other businesses. The difference in the sponsors of professional teams is that there will be bigger businesses sponsoring the Cardinals, such as AT&T, Ford, or Budweiser. For the Chicago Cubs, they are under the same framework when it pertains to their promotional schedule. The Cubs host events where the organization will partner with businesses such as StubHub or Uber to give away hoodies, magnets, or other memorabilia. Where the differences lie between the Cubs and Cardinals are in the incentives programs they offer their season ticket holders. For the Cardinals, one aspect of their incentive program that sets them apart from the Cubs is their MVP card. According to their website, “the MVP card is a card given to all Season Ticket Holders for a 10% discount at Busch Stadium's Team Store located at the corner of 8th & Clark Street, and behind section 130. The 10% discount is also good at the Cardinals Authentic Team Store located in right-center field by Gate 6” (Season ticket department FAQ’s, n.d., p. 5). The Cardinals also give access to discounted tours of Busch Stadium.
