In Christianity, women are perceived as having no sexual desires, which has undermined women’s sexuality throughout history. Still, to this day, there are some controversies about women’s sexuality seen from a Christian perspective. However, the difference in interpretation depends on the translation as well as the interpreter. There are several different translations in which Genesis 3:15-17 is interpreted differently. Nevertheless, according to Alter’s translation, this is the first sign of a woman’s sexual desire: “And for your man shall be your longing, and he shall rule over you”. This phrase has several aspects to it; according to the Christian and more Western perspective, this may be interpreted as the man having the privilege of sexual desire. However, this can be interpreted as the man is a woman’s sexual desire, but that the woman will not be able to express her sexual desire, only a man can do such a thing. In this example, a man is taking another woman but he still has obligations to his first wife, which includes food, clothes, and sex. Therefore, according to the Torah, the woman owns the right to sexual relationships, and not the man. The man is obligated to take care of his woman, which is the opposite view of that of the Western, in which the man has the right and privilege of sexual relationships. This is further expanded upon in Deuteronomy 25:5: “When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out in the army and he shall not cross over on its account for any matter. He shall be exempt in his house for a year and gladden his wife whom he has taken”. A man is obligated to take care of his woman and “gladden” her after they get married. It is, therefore, a man’s responsibility to gladden his wife through sexual desires and hence please her sexually.
