Between the years 1600 to 1700, English colonists were just settling the New World and establishing their own colonies, yet this colonization didn’t come without obstacles. Upon entering the seemingly unscathed land, colonists were greeted by Native Americans. At first, the two groups expressed a relationship characterized by amity and cooperation, yet as time went on, the “white superiority” of the colonists and the belief that they were primary owners of land soured the relationship. It was just a matter of time before the colonists would take over and run out the Native Americans. The Native Americans and Euro-Americans settlers were more different than similar from one another. THESIS: Both the Native Americans and Euro-Americans have very different lifestyles, cultures, and dissimilar perspectives. Euro-Americans saw themselves as conquers of the civilized world and saw the Native Americans as “savages”. Both Euro-Americans and Native Americans had a different theory about the land; it created problems between the two.
However, after reading this I found that they heavily traded with different tribes and communicated with one another. Unfortunately, when it came to the Europeans, the Native Americans weren’t so welcoming, and understandably so. The Vision
Due to the different natural resources (ranging from beaver fur to medicinal herbs) available in the colonies, the patterns of interaction greatly varied between the European settlers and the Native Americans depending on the location. Before 1775, in New York, the interactions centered primarily around trading fur or war weapons. However, although the settlers and natives in the New Spain region traded herbs for manufactured herbal medicine, the settlers mainly focused their time on spreading their religion and starting mission trails throughout California. In the eighteenth century, the interactions between the Europeans settlers and the Native Americans in New York and New Spain developed in the same manner overtime since every group wanted to strengthen their regions politically and economically by creating alliances and promoting trade to increase their mother country’s global footprint; however, they did differ due to how the Europeans in the west mainly came to North America in pursuit of independence while the settlers of New Spain wanted to spread their religion and the Spanish Empire to the new lands.

The French and the Spanish forged relationships with the Natives in terms of economy, culture and religion. Both sought profit through exploitation and trade of New World resources. The two nations also knew that the indigenous people would be very important assets to their success. In terms of religion, the French responded gently by encouraging Catholicism, befriended them and trade with them. The Spanish, on the other hand, oppressed religion onto the Native Americans responded harshly pertaining to economy.
The relations between the early settlers and the native Americans were sour from the start of American settlement. The main cause of this bitterness was that fact that the first settlers aka puritans only saw Indians as savages and that the Indians would be never be equal to them, and the start of this conflict was when puritans started seizing native American land for their own use illegally. and even though most native Americans didn 't like the settlers some tribes sided with the settlers in future wars to come. European Colonists and American Indians interacted in different ways that established a variety of relationships among the different cultures and people, varying region to region. In the colony of New England, the two main groups of people were the English Puritan settlers, who were primarily driven by religious duty, and the Pequot Tribe, who were one of the most powerful Native American tribes in that region. In 1620, just before the English arrived, a smallpox epidemic among various other diseases, devastated various Native American tribes located throughout New England, including the Wampanoag and Pequot tribes. This plague subsequently killed three fourths of the indigenous population located in the region of New England.
European exploration of the West began in 1500 and continued to flourish for over three centuries. While colonizing this new land, Europeans first came into contact with the native peoples. European religious views, gender roles, and land ownership shaped their interactions with Native Americans. The English, for example, practiced Christianity, while the Native Americans possessed a more spiritual and animalistic religion. Native American societies were heavily reliant on women for not only household duties, but also agricultural responsibilities.
The Europeans came mostly in peace; however, the Native Americans saw the newcomers as a threat to their livelihood. Amoroleck, an Indian captured by the Europeans after a clash between the two, explained that the Native Americans attacked the settlers because they believed the settlers “were a people come from under the world, to take their world from them.” (Merrell 45) With early conflicts, neither party was coming out victorious with their losses out numbering their winnings between the Indians and Europeans. Eventually, the Native Americans would accept the Europeans and even live jointly, aiding one another whether it was determining the best hunting grounds, planting the right crops in the right area, or incorporating lifestyles by helping round up escaped slaves. The two parties learned to make the most out and how to benefit from each other.
As the song goes, "In 1492,in fourteen ninety two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." Before Christopher Columbus sailed to the New World, the Native Americans knew it as their home. Soon after Columbus reported back to let all of Europe know that he successfully found land, European settlers quickly followed. Every tribe was one of it 's kind, yet their cultures shared the importance of their religious practices, beliefs, and values . The Native Americans were generally very peaceful people, that is, until the Europeans invaded their land and forced them to fight back.
1. Paleo-Indians Paleo-Indians are described as the initial Americans, those who set forth the preliminaries of Native American culture. They trekked in bands of around fifteen to fifty individuals, around definite hunting terrains, establishing traditional gender roles of hunter-gatherers. The inferred question is how these regions way of life should be understood as a human experience. Additionally, the question refers to the diversity of human cultures, norms and to their values, as well as to religions and source of livelihood. Diversity can also be seen where their living conditions transform into different cultural expressions that become our history.
The social relationship between Indian and Europeans during 1600 to 1800 in North America started out friendly with trading, then grew hostile on land disputes, and later most of Indians were wiped out by the Europeans. Indians tried to gain their freedom but were no match to the technological advancements of Europeans. They continued to be tied under a treaty and were pushed around as Europeans pleased. The social relationship was an integral part of relations between the Indian and Europeans. It was the main difference between the two groups of people and why they went against each other.
Upon the first colonial establishments, the Europeans viewed Native Americans as uncultured, unintelligent, and uncivilized. The first colonizers found themselves ultimately superior to the perceived rudimentary cultural and societal customs that were observed. Native Americans viewed Europeans as a strictly one sided cultural mass enforcement foreign establishment, stopping at nothing to enforce their perceived superiority in all forms of cultural and societal aspects. Differences in land use, gender roles, and societal history added to the wedging and hostility between the Native Americans and European people. Upon the European's first impression of Native American culture, the first notable aspect of their "species" and society was their promising outlook as potential slave laborers.
