Much of the initial work on Jurassic period strata was conducted in western Europe, during the early 19th century. The Rocky Mountains were begun during this time, the large swaths of sandstone deposits such as Zion National Park and Moab in Southern Utah and the 4-corners areas of the US have their birth in this period.
