The story takes place in the British Colony of Massachusetts in the year 1692. During this time witchcraft was a forbidden act. The act resulted in the execution of 20 people and over 100 others were placed in jail. Often times people that were executed or jailed were those who practiced folk customs. At that time people were terrified of the Devil or anything relating to it. Therefore, anyone who was suspected to be a witch was also suspected to be in cahoots with the Devil. This caused an added amount of hysteria and fear. Had the story taken place in another time period it would not have been as detrimental. For example, if the story had taken place now no one would really bat an eye. There are so many customs and traditions people follow now a days. Plus no one has an intense fear of witchcraft because it's barely ever mentioned. Overall the time period of the story is an essential part to its setting.
