The halfway house concept first come to into practice during the early 1800s, being used as a transitional residence for criminal offenders. Since its inception, it was met with opposition from community members. The offenders were typically completely destitute from the community. They were met with natural prejudice so strong that it was found to be difficult for the offender to find employment. The residences that were used as halfway houses were in rundown neighborhoods and the houses were structurally unsound. Halfway houses went through a revival period where they are now considered as a good recommendation for offenders. Hence, the homes are also less restrictive the those inpatient type of programs and a person can ask permission to leave the house to go somewhere, which could be bad or good, and as always will depend on the person leaving the house. Consequently, there are pros to having halfway houses that are open in a neighborhood. These temporary homes are where recovering alcoholics and addicts can live once they have completed their rehab treatment. One of the pros is the home allows for the reintegration into the community, while having a support group that consist of peers and having a monitoring system that is managed and monitored by the staff. Another pro to having a halfway house is the fact that they would have access to many different programs, such as, GED training, various vocational training, provide medical and dental assistances, and recreational activities, just to name a few.
