Epictetus was a Greek philosopher who was originally a slave in what today is called Turkey. After gaining his freedom he began to share his principles on how to live life with his students. The lessons/principles he taught is what makes him significant to still talk about him today. In the “Discourses and Selected Writings of Epictetus” he teaches the true meaning of happiness, ways to reason in certain scenarios, valuing material things, self-worth, your physical being and most importantly the importance of what your mind is worth. In today’s world people often value material things such as phones, clothes, and things of that nature. However they can become so attached to that item and to a certain degree that product now owns the owner or it just may hinder relationships that the owner may have with love ones. In Book 2 chapter 10 vs. 8 reads “Next, know that you are a brother. This role also calls for deference, respect and civility. People can beat you up or you can be put into a situation because of authority but they will not be able to take your thought. He stands strong in this in Book 2 Chapter 18 vs 17 he teaches a student the value of integrity it reads: “ But the tyrant will chain- what will he chain? Your leg. He will chop off- what? Your head. What he will never chain or chop off is your integrity. That’s the reason behind the ancient advice to know yourself.” That verse still remains significant because during his time many people didn’t have rights they were under a ruler and had to do what that person said.
