John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men, depicts race as a critical factor to the dominance of people during this time period. Racism is presented most evidently in chapter four by the treatment of Crooks, the stable buck. Crook’s and his fellow workers discussed ambitions in his quarters, which happened to be separate from the others clearly due to his skin tone. As the men conversed topics regarding the near future, Curley’s wife abruptly barged into the area searching for her husband. Noting the peril with which Curley’s wife is associated with,
And as a person of color, Crooks realizes and sees all this happening, just before the conversation, Lennie asked, “‘Why ain’t you wanted. Cause I 'm black,’” Crooks responded (OMAN 68). Crooks sees all of the small but racist actions that are done upon him by the other workers, not letting him play cards, saying he stinks, Crooks knows that this is all just because he is
There are few words more loaded with history and personal connotation than racism or sexism. Whether you are using it to examine the past, explain the present, or predict the future, just using the word often draws out emotion from people of all walks of life. Though it is a sensitive topic, it is an important one. Mice and Men is the story of George and Lennie, two friends that travel from farm to farm, looking for work, in the hopes that one day they will have enough money to buy their own farm. But Mice and Men also contains a supporting cast, all of them with their own fears and desires.

‘Of Mice and Men’ is a novella set at the time of the ‘Great Depression’, this time period was extremely tough for all Americans due to the lack of stable jobs. Unfortunately, discrimination against black people was extremely prevalent as America was a very racist place. ‘Of Mice and Men’ highlights the discrimination towards black people through Crooks, a black stable buck. One way Steinbeck demonstrates discrimination towards Crooks is through Candy’s explanation of the boss’s attitude towards him. In chapter two, when George and Lennie arrive late at the bunkhouse, Candy tells them about the boss giving the stable buck “hell” as they did not arrive on time.
Black men, women black and white, people with disabilities have been victims of discrimination. For a long time people were even going threw it, it was even going on during the great depression. In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck there are a few examples of how people were discriminated in that time. By examining the characters Lennie,Crooks, and Curleyś wife in of Mice and Men it is clear that there was discrimination on the ranch and it affected many lives negatively.
In the novel “Of Mice and Men” the theme of social injustice is presented by John Steinbeck through the characters of Lennie, Curley’s wife, and Crooks. By examining the theme of social injustice one can be taught that treating someone based on their mental capability, gender, or race is wrong. Rather treat them base on the person they are on the
Crooks insists that Lennie leave him alone showing how he demands that other workers listen to him. By standing up to a white man Crooks demonstrates that he believes he needs to fight for his equality. Finally, Crooks teases Lennie by telling him that George may not come back from Old Susy’s for him. Crooks seems like a terrible person for picking on Lennie but this situation is about Crooks fighting against a White man. This event illustrates how Crooks will make a stand against anyone who might discriminate against him because of his race in order to achieve fair treatment.

You can quickly realize how racism isn’t just so simple, and neither sides help each out. This builds more tension and provokes even more racism sometimes leading to people being completely isolated to “stop” the racism. But clearly isolation doesn't stop it either as I have seen with Crooks, a black stable buck in John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” (Penguin books 1993).
Crooks is African American, and in this time many people treated African American’s horribly so not many people tried to understand him. He was treated like an animal, almost everyone called him names, and no one tried to even get to know him. In the novella Of Mice and Men Crooks says, ”… You go on get outta my room. I ain’t wanted in the bunk house, and you ain’t wanted in my room.”
Respect Esteem, rather than tolerance, must be the goal to lessen prejudice in life. Discrimination is frequently based on a person’s knowledge, age, or race. For many reasons, people suffer from loneliness as a result of this kind of discrimination. Everybody should receive fair treatment. In the story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, one can see how discrimination greatly affects Lennie and Crooks, which is important because it shows the detrimental effects of oppression and loneliness.
Discrimination – the destroyer of dreams “I ain’t much good with only one hand,” bemoans Steinbeck’s character ‘Candy’. The disabled farmhand works his best on the farm in “Of Mice and Men”, but nobody can see past his injury. Ageing, and weak, he is fearful: “I won’t have no place to go, and I can’t get no more jobs.” The poor man has just had his old dog put down, and himself fears going out the same way too. John Steinbeck wrote the controversial novella in 1937, creating an emotionally rich world of characters with a depth beyond their characteristic disabilities.
Crook’s character is being discriminated due to his skin color which soon caused him to be disregarded. Although at a certain point, Crooks stood up but no good has come to him. Challenging discrimination is strenuous, however it is necessary in order for an individual to advance. One of the most lousy assumption made during the novel’s time period is the hierarchy between the color of men.
In 1920 when the 19th amendment was passed allowing women to vote, many women thought that Gender Inequality was coming to an end. Soon after, the Great Depression happened, and everyone was focused on that. Life for women was especially hard then because they had to live in a world full of poverty and discrimination. Throughout Of Mice and Men we see this through Curley’s Wife. She just wants to fit in and talk to the men without thinking she wants something, or being called rude names.
