QUESTION 1 Discuss the differences between the two accounts of the massacre of the people of Cholula as given in chapter 5. The first account is from the Codex Florentino and the second account is from The History of Tlaxcala. The first account in the Codex Florentino is from the Tlaxcaltecas point of view. The Tlaxcaltecas observed the Spanish easily defeating the Otomies, and then decided to use the Spaniards to defeat their enemies, the Cholula. The Tlaxcaltecas used rumors and lies to influence the Spanish to their cause. The Tlaxcaltecas marched with the Spanish and called a meeting with the Cholula people. The Cholula people came unarmed and were easily massacred. The second account in the History of Tlaxcala differs slightly; it describes a messenger from Tlaxcalteca going to the Cholultecas and begging them to receive the Spanish in peace and to come unarmed to a meeting. The Cholutecas disfigured the messenger and decided to die rather than surrender. The accounts highlighted the Tlaxcaltecas involvement with the Spanish and their quest inland. Leon-Portilla argues the differences in the accounts could be an afterthought by the Tlaxcaltecas to try and excuse their involvement in the massacre of the Cholutecas.
