One’s culture has a huge impact on their experience of psychological disorders. It may affect their experience in a good or bad way. If a culture has a certain stigma about people with psychological disorders, it may cause the people close to him/her to treat them differently especially if the topic of psychological disorders is not commonly talked about. The people around them may start to have a negative perception of the person dealing with the disorder. Discrimination could occur in that instance due to how the people may see the person as “not normal” while the rest are classified as “normal”. Culture, unavailability, lack of trust, and denial are just some of the many reasons that can affect whether a person decides to go to therapy. Again as we talked about earlier, culture impacts not only the experience of psychological disorders but the treatment as well. If they come from a culture that sees therapy as something that’s taboo or is something they don’t believe in, they won’t go to therapy. They also may be less open and likely to talk as much or as comfortably as someone whose culture doesn’t see therapy as a bad thing. They may be afraid that they’ll be caught by family members or friends who see this as something bad. They might feel if they go to therapy, people will perceive them as weird and abnormal. That label could create bigger issues and they want to avoid it as much as possible. The fear of therapy could make them be more closeted when they are speaking to the therapist and that would make it much harder for both the therapist and themselves. Denial and the lack of insight is always a common reason why people choose to not seek therapy. Many times people feel that they are fine and trick themselves into thinking so which leads them to not seek therapy. If they believe that they are not “sick” or need help, then they’ll not seek treatment or help of any kind. Lastly, unavailability has a huge impact on whether a person wants to seek help or not. The person may want help but they can’t afford it or they simply don’t have enough time. However now, there are many resources out there for people who may not be able to afford therapy. Time, on the other hand, is a trickier subject to combat since there’s not changing time. The person can, however, find a way to clear up some time in their schedule to better and help themselves.
