Throughout Europe in that late 1800s and early 1900s, imperialism was spreading and causing problems in many countries. Imperialism is described as a country trying to take control or take over another country. When doing this, there was no respect for the people or culture of the region and little feelings of the residents were taken into consideration. Because of the forceful action imperialism takes, it causes many problems within the area being attacked. Many negative effects such as food shortage, lost customs, sickness, and even death, took a toll on countries such as Africa, India and many more. While some people believe imperialism had many positive effects, the negative effects of imperialism much outweigh the good. Many things contributed to the negative effects imperialism brought upon many countries. For one, the overall aspect of imperialism was forcefully taking over someone's land, thus causing problems among the citizens living there. Africa was seen as a large target because of the size of the land. Each country felt they deserved a piece of africa for themselves and took little to no consideration of the Africans living there. Many lasting effects caused by countries such as Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Belgium all took a toll on the country. In large, Africans lost control of their land and independence. Africa was placed under indirect rule of the british, slowly being “westernized” by Britain. Along with being under indirect rule, Africa faced problems with sickness. Many Africans died from new sicknesses such as smallpox that were transferred overseas by controlling countries. The africans were not immune to any of the diseases and did not have modern medicine to cure
