Discuss The Pros And Cons Of Geoengineering

550 Words3 Pages

Climate change has been a debate for many years. Scientists have been steadily working for more than two decades on ways to curb this issue. Geoengineering, which is the active transformation of the world's climate through human intervention. This is a field that emerged as a response to global warming and other forms of environmental degradation. It is about using technology to curb climate changes and global warming. Geoengineers suggest the use of chemicals to lower global temperatures and filtering carbon dioxide from the air. (Wigley, 2006)
These methods according to geoengineers can help solve this issue but it is certainly not permanent. Although, there is a need for solving the issue of climate change scientists have argued that geoengineering will have detrimental negative effects on the world as a whole. This paper is going to look at the pros and the cons of geoengineering as a solution to the climate changes. Then look at the reasoning behind why geoengineering should not be considered. …show more content…

Due to this reason, there is a pressing need for a solution to this problem before it gets worse than it is. Reasons for global warming are known to scientists all over, and the solution lies in science. Geoengineers have suggested that reflecting the sunlight back into space will reduce temperatures. Other ways are soaking up carbon dioxide, spraying sulfur particles at high altitudes to mimic cooling effects of volcanoes, putting iron in oceans or using fake trees to absorb carbon dioxide. The advantages of these methods are that they might work and reduce the temperatures. The method is also cheap to the international community. ( Kareiva, Kingsolver & Huey,
