Essential to overcoming adversity is the ability to cause change in yourself and others. In the book, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard by Rick Riordan, Magnus Chase has to learn to accept his new life, journey and friends. This helps him to become a hero because it teaches him the rules of the world and his journey. Ultimately, Rick Riordan shows that the ones who help you most through your journey build you into a hero.
Even people at the bottom have journeys alongside friends. In the beginning, Magnus Chase starts out at the bottom, homeless in Boston. He wanders the streets with his two buddies Hearth and Blitz. His uncle, Randolph, frantically tells him he’s on the verge of death. Blitz and Hearth help him around when homeless.“Myths are simply stories about truths we’ve forgotten.” (27). Randolph Chase says to Magnus Chase before his journey.
It's the relationships you have through your journey that help you complete your quest. As the plot progresses, he ends up fighting a fire giant, Surt, on a bridge with his father’s, the norse god Frey, sword. He dies a heroic death and starts his afterlife

Finally, after the heroic fight and rebinding, Magnus gets sent to meet with his father, Frey. “We’ve got you. We’re your family.”(429), Magnus Chase to Sam, Blitz and Hearth. This quote demonstrate friendship, and relief that they made it through the journey alive. He is handed his mother’s ashes and trecs back to Valhalla with his crew. When back, a troll named X reveals he’s been disguised as the All-Father, Odin. Each fighter on Magnus’ journey was rewarded with a prize. Magnus reunites with his cousin in Midgard and they become friends again. This realization changes his perspective because he really starts to understand the true feeling of a hero and having true friends to get you there.
