After reading Elie Wiesel’s “Night,” there are many questions readers have. One of them being, how did Wiesel survive the horrors of the Holocaust when so many did not? There were a lot of things that helped Elie through the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel wrote on page vii “There are those who tell me that I survived in order to write this text.” The three most important things revealed while reading “Night” were the importance of religion, humanity or the lack of humanity shown towards others, and the importance of relationships like the father-son bond. On page 26 Mrs. Schachter was with everyone on the train. This example does not help them stay strong or help them survive. Mrs. Schachter keeps screaming because she is seeing “fire and flames” the people on the train are getting angry with her and start beating her. This event can also bring others down because she is seeing what will happen to them in the future, but by beating her it is also hurting her son mentally. If the people on the train had listened to her and started to build relationships, they could have found out what was going to happen to them and even planned for it. On page 89 the relationship shown when Elie wanted to save his father and his father wanted to save him. They both decided to go back to the “shed” but they both wanted the other to sleep first to get the strength to keep fighting and running. In chapter 8 on page 99 Elie wanted to keep his father alive and from being thrown off the train with the other dead bodies. He is showing the importance of relationships because he is risking his own life and arguing with men that are bigger than him just to save his father. In these examples it shows that it is important to build relationships throughout this story to find out what others know or even to understand what they are
