Jordan informs Nick of Gatsby and Daisy’s love story; Gatsby had been Daisy’s lover before he left to fight in the war and has been in love with her all these years. She explains how Gatsby had been planning to win her back
During the 1920’s, many people were power-hungry. They all wanted to be at the top and be the richest of the rich and be able to buy whatever they want. The 1920’s was a time where people were able to go from rags to riches, industries were growing and making money, and it was also the era of the Prohibition, a law that banned alcohol. “The Great Gatsby” was able to reflect on noticeable and non-noticeable aspects of the 1920’s. It reflects on the postwar disillusionment, the rise of the nouveau riche, and how business became the new religion for the United States.
Jesse Zapata 3/7/16 Ms. Pruitt Seminar Questions: The Great Gatsby 1. Fitzgerald uses setting to emphasize various aspects of his social classes in the novel. The Valley of Ashes is a dark place, and it is home to the poor, unfortunate lower class then was exploited during the 1920s. West Egg is tacky and looming, representing how many of the young millionaires (The "New Money") in the novel have found themselves suddenly rich and upper class without preparation. East Egg is just the opposite.
Gatsby tells Nick that he came from a very wealthy family, and that he studied at Oxford University. “I’ll tell you God’s truth.” His right hand suddenly ordered divine retribution to stand by. “I am the son of some wealthy people in the Middle West—all dead now. I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford, because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years.
he wanted to be in the bond business, in fact that’s why he came to new york. Nick relates to me because he is trying to live the American dream. Unlike Nick, Gatsby has already succeeded most of it except for love. Gatsby is one version of America; the resourceful,
As they drive to the city, Gatsby tells Nick about his past, but his story is a little unbelievable at first. He claims, for instance, to be the son of wealthy, deceased parents from the Midwest. When Nick asks which Midwestern city he is from, Gatsby replies, “San Francisco.” But San Francisco isn’t a part of the Midwest. Gatsby then lists a long and very detailed set of accomplishments: he claims to have been educated at Oxford, to have collected jewels in the capitals of Europe, to have hunted big game, and to have been awarded medals in World War
While talking to Nick about his past, Gatsby tells him “I’ll tell you God’s truth [...] I am the son of some wealthy people in the Middle West - all dead now. I was brought up in America, but educated at Oxford, because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years. It is a family tradition.” (Fitzgerald 65).
The American Dream comes and goes throughout everyone’s lives in America. But for some, it shows a spark of hope of a dream that will allow them to succeed in life. Whether it is something that people want to have in their lives or having a goal in their mind, it is what allows people to continue pushing through life and doing everything to get what they want. The American Dream creates a vision of what people want in their future but, if this “vision” fails, many people would either give up or find a new dream. There are many reasons why people give up on their dreams, but some, they believe that it is out of their control to accomplish their dreams such as the main characters in The Great Gatsby.
Living the American Dream, a once in a lifetime experience. That’s how it’s depicted in The Great Gatsby, like in real life you must be lucky to live the American Dream. Yet, that experience can slip right out of your hands with today’s society. Fitzgerald’s vision of the American Dream in The Great Gatsby is similar to today’s ideals as it was influenced by American history, depicts the hardships, different ideas of the American Dream, lack of mobility, and inequalities in society. Like in real life, the character’s actions were influenced by historical events.
The year is 1925: with the end of The Great War came the great realization that life is short and shouldn’t be wasted on satiating suffocating societal norms. This is the age of the “New Woman.” Jordan Baker, a character in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, is an example of the so-called, “flappers,” that defined this period in women’s history. Through haughty words, arrogant behavior, and an intimidating disposition, Fitzgerald depicts Jordan as an independent woman trying to balance life as a poised lady of the socioeconomic elite with life as a free-spirited athlete, struggling to prove herself in a male-dominated world. Throughout pages 8-19, her haughty words, arrogant behavior, and intimidating disposition give insight
The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, was published during the 1920s, a time of great social transformation that served a reaction to the horrors faced in World War One. During this time period, women were experiencing many positive, progressive changes such as gaining the right to vote. Women had also been allowed to have jobs outside of their traditional roles during the war, many taking on factory jobs that were seen as masculine and unfit for women. This new independence led to the rise of flappers, portrayed in The Great Gatsby by the character of Jordan Baker. Flappers were characterized during this time period as letting go of stigmas and restrictions previously placed on women.
Mr. Hundert who is experienced works at St. Benedict. Young boys who are ready to become young men filled his class. He gives it all he got into his work. Which leads to the statement, Mr. Hundert is a bad teacher because of the disrespectfulness towards his students. The way he treats Sedgewick throughout the story.

He later states, “I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford, because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years. It is a family tradition” (Fitzgerald, 65). This is what Gatsby wants Nick to believe but, in reality, Nick tells the reader that Gatsby was a man by the name of James Gatz and he was the son of unsuccessful farmers.

Nick, at a later point, learns that the reason Gatsby lives here he does is because he’s in love with Nick's cousin, Daisy. Nick later introduces Daisy to Gatsby.
