It about a relationship ending and with their child caught up in the middle of it all. 2. What is the author’s view? How do I know? I think the author’s view is that this unhealthy relationship where the two people have had a continuous struggle of power in the house has finally come to an end and the child is caught between. 3. What is the evidence presented by the author to support ideas? The author shows us evidence of this unhealthy relationship ending when the man is seen packing his bag, to show evidence of struggle in this relationship, the author shows us that the mother was not ready to give up a picture not even her baby without a fight. Is the evidence valid? How do I know? This evidence is valid, in life and in the story, it is. When she says, “Son of a bitch! I am so glad you are leaving!” (Carver, 1981). We know for sure the relationship has ended. A struggle for power in this relationship is evidenced when the woman picks a picture from the bed before the man packs it too. And from his authoritative tone he commands her to bring it back. He shows power over her which she fights too. Another scenario of evidence is when he walks into the living room and commands her again to give him the baby.
