Movies offer different ways of looking at the world and everything in it. Each movie tells a story and the story can be inferred many different ways. Dissenting voice movies go against what the normal is, creating diversity and uniqueness. The ideology of the dissenting voice movies are not obvious to everyone. To find the ideology of these films, the audience must really think about what the movie is trying to portray to the audience. In this paper I will analyze the movies Mulan, The Lion King, and WALL-E. By examining the binary opposites, symbols, motifs, and archetypes, I will show dissenting voice ideologies in animated movies.
Mulan showcases many different lessons. Mulan is breaking the hero stereotype because she is a female. The stereotypical hero is a male, who always get a reward for saving the day. Female heroes are creating diversity throughout movies, changing the new normal. …show more content…

Females in the Chinese patriarchal society are expected to have arranged marriages. These females should act as a wife and not have ambitions. Females in this society are supposed to be quiet housewives. When Mulan speaks her opinion, Chi Fu gets mad at Mulan’s father for allowing her to grow up and have an opinion, revealing that this society thinks that males are superior to females. In the scene, “I’ll Make a Man Out of You”, Mulan and many others are taught how to act like a man. Women are not treated as equal because they are not allowed to train with the males. Males and females can have the same characteristics, making them equal. But the Chinese society did not believe that males and females were equal. Mulan breaks the Disney stereotype of most princesses. She is considered a tomboy, who is strong and independent. Most Disney princesses are beautiful and feminine, becoming the damsel in distress
