Dissociative Identity Disorder

The Dissociative Identity Disorder, formally known as multiple personality disorder, is a rare condition that allows two or more distinct identities, known as alters, to be present in one person’s mind, and even sometimes take control of it, something that some people refer to as a “possession”. The average number of personalities that a person suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder can have is between eight and thirteen. However, there have been cases where a person has even had more than 100 alters. Each personality may have their own name, background, age, and, on some occasions, some of them may have sicknesses or disabilities that the others do not. Some of the treatments that are offered in treatment centers are: individual psychotherapy sessions, family therapy, anger management, neurofeedback, cognitive behavioral therapy, etc. with psychotherapy being considered to be the most important one. The primary goal of DID therapy is merging all the different personalities together, or at least making the core personality aware of them. Another goal is letting all the different personalities coexist and work together. There is no medicine that exists specifically for this disorder, but sometimes specialists will prescribe antidepressants or tranquilizers to help control the symptoms. Sometimes, hypnosis is used to help the core personality have control over his or her alters. Another type of treatment is the eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EDMR), that is being used more and more because it has given results in helping patients deal with their memory lapses and control over the alters. It is very important for people with dissociative identity disorder to be treated, because most of them are vulnerable to substance abuse, as well as to dangerous ways of coping with their pain. The risk of suicide in individuals with DID is also a big problem. People with DID have a hard time to have good relationships. They also have a hard time at work and are less productive with their
