Most Americans have all at least one time in their lives were driving in an automobile, and while driving picked up a cell phone, eaten and or drinking, or even fixed your hair in the rear view mirror. While performing these acts you have to actually take your eyes and attention off the road and therefore your risk for an accident increases substantially. Some of the accidents could be minor however, a lot of the accidents could be and are fatal. These acts are called distracted driving and is defined as the act of driving and the driver is engaged in other activities. There are many things that can be classified as distracted driving however, the main culprits would be looking at a smartphone or cell phone, texting, eating or drinking, personal grooming, and using a GPS or the radio. There has been more and more education recently, making drivers aware of the potential dangers of distracted driving. This trend has to continue and there has to be even more education. Technology has improved over the recent years and more and more individuals are getting addicted to their smartphones and social media, which makes it hard to put down even when driving. Starting with the younger generation, the education of distracted driving should be mandatory in schools in the driver’s education class. After that, there should be refresher courses for adults every few years when renewing a driver’s license and should be mandatory if there has been any citation issued by law enforcement. These courses should include information, statistics and real life stories from the people who may have lost their loved ones to distracted driving.
