In Beatrice’s world, there are five factions, each consisting of their own lifestyles. The first, is the Abnegation which are known for having power of the government. Then there are the Dauntless, which are in control of security of the entire city. The Amity are known for growing crops and managing the aggregation system. On the other hand, Erudites are in charge of the education system. Whereas Candor handle the law and justice of the city. To get admitted into a faction, one must take an aptitude examination at the age of sixteen, that determines their placement. The city where Beatrice resides from has trains that go over 200 miles an hour and many corporate offices. Beatrice is forced the age of 16 to select the faction that she will belong to the rest of her life. With having to leave the comforting and known lifestyle that she grew up in, the Abnegation, to follow her heart by joining the Dauntless, brings many challenges. Finding out that she is a divergent also makes it even more difficult since she must hide her true identity. The primary character of the novel, is Beatrice. She is currently sixteen years old when she finds out that she is the Divergent. By selecting the Dauntless Faction, it portrays that she is daring and always up for a challenge. Beatrice learns that being the Divergent means that she must always hide this secret, so she is not hunted by the other factions. As she learns about herself, she also sees the true untapped powers of being the Divergent. The setting for Divergent, is very modern and futuristic. With the city consisting of four different factions, there is something always going on. There are many corporate offices that are occupied by the Erudites.
