Diversity In South High School

Do you know South High School is the most diverse school in the Denver area and also, do you know South represents more than 42 different cultures and countries. In addition to that, South honors the different cultures every year by hosting Culture Fest and welcomes parents and neighbors to the event. Currently, 72% of the students at South are students of color and most of the students come from the Aurora side to experience diversity and more opportunity. Frankly, South accepts students from all the districts of Denver Public School and other districts as well. South provides cheaper transportation pass to students who come from outside of Denver and gives free bus pass to students who live in Denver. While many U.S school struggle with accepting non district students, South accepts students from any district in Denver. According to DPS and Ms. Campbell, “South is the only school that provides new comer program”(Campbell). The reason that a lot of new comer students come to South is to take basic English classes and to be included in the Community as well. Many U.S schools are bias toward new comer students due to their background and culture, although, South respects and celebrates their culture every year. South is doing well in accepting newcomers and provides them support in the class. South need to improve its students score on the CMAS or the other standard exam in order to get more funding. apparently, students at South are failing in the Accuplacer test due to not knowing grammars so South should provide a grammar class to enhance students ability. According to Kamentz Anya’s interview on NPR, “ A potentially large group of kids who got diplomas but who weren’t ready to succeed in college” (Anya). There is a misconception that every students who graduated from High School are ready for college, but those students graduate from high school without knowing how to read and write, therefore, when they get to college, they get overwhelmed with the reading and writing. Since 72% of students at South are from different countries, there should be college readiness program at South High School, as well as career pathway courses. Obviously, students who come from different country have insufficient education but South has not notice it, therefore, the majority of South students are not sufficiently ready for next step. Ms. Campbell, who is a teacher at South High School posits, “ at least 150 students took the Accuplacer test and didn’t do well” (Brook). It’s obvious that the students have more ability and strength despite their failure on the Accuplacer test. I don’t think that the students’ ability is based on the Accuplacer test in fact students do good on the things that matter to them. Even though, South is working to improve students readiness for college, but South should also work on providing more support classes for ESL
