In this essay, I will argue how the Chicanos in the U.S. have responded to the lack of inclusion in history, opportunities, to racism and violence because through time we have seen how the Chicanos have been part of the country history and what it came to be, but we have been left out of history. The Chicano helped build what the united states came to be, we are part of its culture since the treaty of Guadalupe was signed, but our path has not been easy, many have been victims of oppression, poor working conditions, lack of civil rights and segregation. I’ll argue not that the Chicano has been a victim but what he or she have done to change the way things were for our ancestors in this obscure past of our history, how we have come together
The Hispanic Student Association, or HSA for short, was founded in 1999 by Nestor "Ito" Rodriguez the former president of HSA. Who is now currently the head of the Hispanic alumni council and married to Jaclyn Rodriguez. The organization is located on the main campus in the university center (UC) through the involvement zone in room 221. The purpose of HSA is to spread and demonstrate to other students the marvels of the Hispanic culture and to enrich their minds of the cultural diversity that is around them. To accomplish this HSA does many social events and gatherings, such as the St. Jude walk/run and Hispanic heritage month, which allows students of any background to come and enjoy the Hispanic culture in a safe and discrimination free
During my Junior Year of high school, I fell into an immense state of depression and was diagnosed with anxiety and attention deficit disorder. Anxiety destroyed my confidence and morphed minor problems into mountains that I dared not climb. My inability to focus and lack of energy further enlarged my issues, and impaired my belief that I could overcome this challenging time. Being a first generation Latina, stigma revolving mental health in our community made it difficult for my parents to understand how depression and anxiety impairs one 's ability to function. Because I refused to seek help, I lost all resilience and motivation to strive forward, and as a result, my grades and relationships suffered tremendously.
The increasing numbers of Latino youth who obtain college degrees are become active in politics, with the biggest trend of Latino population is youth and growth we can only hope for even more support in politics. “For the first time ever, Latinos accounted for one in ten votes cast nationwide in the presidential election, and Obama recorded the highest ever vote total for any presidential candidate among Latinos, at 75%” (Barreto and Segura 145). The Latino vote is becoming a crucial element to politics because of their size in population. . “While turnout declined nationally from 2008 to 2012 (by 2%), among Latinos there was a 28% increase in votes cast in 2012 (from 9.7 million to 12.5 million) and Obama further increased his vote share among Latinos in 2012 compared to 2008” (Barreto and Segura 145). We’re constantly being influences by our surrounding. Usually, our parent’s cultural background plays a significant part in shaping who we are. On the other hand, co-cultures also promote their own set of values which could easily shape our ideas about certain matters as well. These components are a part of how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive too. Growing in a Mexican household allowed me to be exposed to more family orientated events that included music, food and dancing.
I am very proud of my Hispanic heritage. Even though, I am an United States citizen, I am always going to belong to my Hispanic backgrounds. There are so many reasons that I am proud to be Guatemalan and American that I could write a whole book about it. However, I regularly participate in my Hispanic culture and community through my family, traditions, and by being bilingual.
The traditional definition of Chicano social identity throughout the civil rights era is still valuable today but to a certain extent. The consciousness and commitment to activism are the two parts of the definition that still hold meaning. Cultural pride as stated as part of the definition, is limited only to those who are of Mexican decent, educated, those that are of middle class and the politically involved. It excludes those who are undocumented, are biracial, Central Americans, Chicana lesbians and Chinese immigrants. Therefore, the definition of Chicano social identity should be redefined, but not all completely.
The Chicano/Latino population of the United State has become the second largest minority in the states and as a result it has recently become the target of Corporate America and the media in efforts to profit off them. These efforts have taken the form of marketing tactics aimed at the population itself as well as the youths of the Chicano/Latino population. These efforts though have had mixed success, but have had some consequences for the population itself along with a few positive impacts. Corporate America for the most part has attempted to lure the Chicano/Latino population to their products by creating commercials and advertisements directly targeting them and no one else. They do this by usually have a predomitely Latino cast who speaks a mix of Spanish and English or just Spanish with English subtitles.
During my two interviews my with my two people of the Hispanic culture I came to find they were both had a good level of health literacy from a quick glance. It’s interesting I came to this conclusion fast after asking them each their questions, because I barely know these two on a personal level. Raul I met last year at comicpalooza, where we bonded over love over television and movies and came in contact since, mostly having conversations about show/movies; but never had conversations on anything like this level. Francis I met over swim class this fall at UH recreation center, so I came to the conclusion to pick two people I didn’t really know to ask these questions for this paper.
According to a Pew Research Center survey “among Hispanics ages 25 to 29, just 15% of Hispanics had a bachelor’s degree in 2013” (Krogstad). It is great to analyze the lack of Hispanics higher education in the United States and in the State of Kansas something that one cares about by using statistics and information about the racial gap in completion of a degree that explains the lower rates in Hispanics. Hispanics lower incomes contribute to the Hispanics lowest rates of a college degree completion in the State of Kansas. Lower Incomes The Central American immigrants’ low income contribute to the low rate of Hispanics college degree graduates in the State of Kansas.
Las Vegas is where I was born and raised. That doesn’t mean that I just gave up on my Mexican culture. Like many others, I have a culture that is both American and Mexican. My culture has shaped my values, perceptions, and behaviors. The culture of my family, community, and society has made who I am as a person in numerous ways.
I’m the first generation of my family to be Mexican -American, but I have been introduced to the Mexican culture since I was born. I appreciate the difficulties my parents have faced to make me the person that I am today even though I wasn’t born in Mexico my parents have taught me the language and the culture which I’m so proud of being part of. For others being Hispanic is actually being born in any Latin American countries which is not true at all. Being Hispanic is much more than my cultural background it actually describes how much I appreciate my culture and how I get to experience things other people don’t. I fit into the Hispanic community through the experiencing the culture first hand ,participating in traditions and planning to include my culture in my future.
