David Baron’s “The Beast in the Garden” primarily follows the life of Michael Sanders, a biologist working mainly in Boulder, Colorado. Michael’s mission throughout the story is the study and prediction of the dangers of urban cougars. Living in a city of staunch environmentalists, Michael’s attempts to sway public opinion is a daunting task. As it would seem, the majority of Boulder environmentalists value cougar’s lives over human lives. Michael Sanders is a middle aged biologist, originally from a small town in Tennessee.
Judds arguments. First, I could not agree with him more that the presence of large predators such as grizzly bears greatly enhance the wilderness experience. He spent two years on the road learning and experiencing new things, finding out his strengths and weaknesses. He prepared every day leading up to his journey into the wild. The man who gave his a ride into town said that, “Alex said he wanted to go out to the university to study up on what kind of plants he could eat.” So you see, he did not underestimate the treachery of the wild, but instead did everything in his power to prepare for it.

On paragraph 2 he says, "We had hoped to see caribou during our trip, but to our amazement, we witnessed the migration of tens of thousands of caribou with their newborn calves". He provides the anecdote in order to give the audience a firsthand experience of what the Arctic Refuge is like. This story from the President allows the audience to understand the beauty of the Arctic Refuge and why it is important to preserve it.
In Animal Dreams there are many animal symbols: coyote being an important Native American symbol, has been mentioned multiple times from pages 20-142. Coyotes are sometimes known as tricksters; however, in this book, Animal Dreams, it reads more of “beware of the dark side of things and play on your resources,” or we should look at something that we have been trying to avoid. We have learned that Codi had a miscarriage when she was younger, with a guy named Loyd. In chapter eight, “Pictures,” an incident is brought up where Hallie, Codis sister, and Codi are saved by Uda Dells husband, Eddie Dell, while trying to save coyotes in their burrow (was also mention earlier on page 20) (Kingsolver 77).
When Doug met Lil, he was able to see things be what they seem. When learning to draw the Arctic Tern he notices more than what was on the page, “This bird was falling and there wasn’t a single thing in the world that cared at all. It was a terrifying picture I had ever seen. The most beautiful.” (19).
When Jeannette and her family resettles in Battle Mountain, their house was filled with different animals such as dogs, cats, nonpoisonous snakes, lizards and etc. Her each member of the family loved animals and that’s why wherever they moved, they always have animals with them. They even have an injured buzzard for a while, which they name and called as Buster. He is very offensive animals that they ever owned. He is a hateful bird, and Jeannette is glad when his broken wing is healed and he is allowed to fly away.
