Doctor of Pharmacy – Personal Statement
I was in my first year as a pharmacy student when I realized the potentials of pharmacists and the impact they can have in patients’ life. It was when my father experienced a major drug – drug interaction that nearly took his life. I was wondering, how this fatal medical error passed through the entire medical team without a single healthcare provider pointing it out and preventing it from reaching the patient. I figured out that it was a consequence of poor care quality and dysfunction among the medical team. Thankfully, my father recovered well, but he suffered and his hospital stay was prolonged as a result of a preventable error. It was then and there that I realized the capabilities of pharmacists in the healthcare team, in this specific incident, through preventing drug – related problems. After this experience I took it upon myself to fulfill my potentials and contribute to the provision of the best possible healthcare to my patients.

It appeared to me when I was practicing in the National Center for Cancer Care and Research (NCCCR). Although my colleagues thought that it is depressing and mentally draining to work with patients with such a detrimental illness, I see it from a different angle. I believe that we, as healthcare professionals, are able and equipped to enhance the patients’ treatment journeys. Obviously, at the present time, there is no cure for each and every type of cancer. Therefore, we need to do our best to provide the best patient care possible and focus in alleviating the pain and suffer and improving patients’ quality of life. With this believe in mind, I am motivated to be positive and reflect this positivity into the patients, which hopefully would make a significant difference in their course of
