Dodgeball: A Game or a Punishment?
The children fire dodgeballs in the air like rockets. The gym floor that has been meant for play is now a war zone. Recently, school principals in the town of Elkton, Maryland have done the unexpected. They decided to ban dodgeball from their schools’ physical education curriculum. Other schools around the country are also now advocating getting rid of dodgeball and other games like bombardment, slaughter, and prison ball. The principals in Elkton, Maryland think that the games are considered inappropriate and are against the respect that the schools teach to the children. In my opinion, dodgeball is a game that causes some kids to feel bad about themselves. Isn’t the whole point of a game to have fun? Apparently, only some kids feel the fun while others kids feel the pain.

When the children grow up they won’t remember the unbelievable fun they had playing games, but they will remember dodgeballs stinging them like bees. Instead of working as a team to score points, they’re trying to hurt their classmates. Dodgeball doesn’t teach children any team building tactics that are necessary in life. The whole point of going to school is to assimilate how to work with others. In dodgeball, the only thing kids learn is how to pelt hard rubber balls at each other. The messages the school is sending is that it’s okay to hurt people to win a game. In contrast, I think that other games such as soccer or basketball would give the children the chance to work together, but still have a competitive
