When the author says “no technical solutions,” he or she means that the problem cannot be solved with natural sciences. The only way to solve the problem is by changing “human values or ideas. That means there is no perfect single solution to solve the problem.
The author mentions how we cannot achieve “the greatest good for the greatest number” because it is impossible to maximize two variables at once. In other words, the population cannot be maximized while the resources are also maximized. It is simply impossible. Another example of this is increasing the population while expecting to also increase human activity. This does not make sense, as people will have to share their now limited resources.

Our current economy and belief system helps increase the tragedy of the commons. Society needs change. The things people follow today are far too outdated for the growth that is occurring constantly. Whether this is through scientific discoveries, or politics or a combination of the two new ideas or ethics need to be created to follow. An example of an outdated moral is “dog eat dog,” which is another way of saying every man for himself. In addition, there is currently no limit or cap on how many resources people can use. People are taking advantage of commons based on our natural human instincts.
The author feels that the 1967 UN Declaration of Human Rights does not properly represent society. It states that a family is only dependant on its members, when in reality, a family is dependant on the commons of the world. This is why the number of children in a family is such a major
