In the book The Outsiders, author S.E Hinton changes Johnny’s character from shy and nervous in the beginning to brave. She uses the fire scene in chapter 6 to reveal this new side of Johnny by having him heroically rescue the children and save Ponyboy’s life. Firstly, Johnny is so shy and nervous around people he’s always quiet and can barely say hi. The text states, "“Johnny wouldn’t open his mouth unless he was forced to.”

When Johnny saw the burning church he ran inside without hesitation, in the process he did not think about how he could be hurt or even killed.
Ponyboy tried to make a run for it but had his arm grabed. The Soc brought hm to a nearby fountain and held his head under water until he blacked out. Johnny should not be guilty because he saved Ponyboys’s life. He was simply just protecting himself and his friend. Another reason it was self defense was because the Socs initiated the fight.

Even so, Johnny should not be charged with murder because because he has all of the things from , for example he has post-traumatic stress(PTSD) from him getting beat by Bob before we know this because the marks on Johnny match with the rings. However, according to First Degree Murder vs. Second Degree Murder the text says “There are certain circumstances that might reduce the sentencing from first or second degree murder to manslaughter or homicide. Depression, post-traumatic stress, mental disorders and self defence”. This shows that Johnny was under symptoms of ptsd. depression, post-traumatic stress, mental disorders and self defence.
The murder of Bob was justified in “The Outsiders" because Johnny's actions are identified as self-defense and justified based on Bob’s actions which are not justified. From “The Outsiders,” page 56, it says “I ducked and tried to run for it, but the Soc caught my arm and twisted it behind my back, and shoved my face into the fountain,” and, “The next thing I knew I was lying on the pavement beside the fountain, coughing water and gasping. I lay there weakly, breathing in air and spitting out water.” This shows one of the Socs, ordered by Bob as he said “David, give him a bath.” He used deadly force in an attempt to murder (as drowning)
This is like a person trying to cheat of another kid on a test. I think this is a good thing to do helping another buddy out that might go to jail because he killed someone in self defense. Jail is like someone just lost their most important family member. How would that make you feel that is how much jail means to Dally. He might’ve not helped them and let Johnny go to jail but no he didn't he risked his life to keep his friend out of jail.
Johnny made this spontaneous decision because the Socs were trying to drown Ponyboy in the park’s fountain. When Ponyboy realized Johnny murdered Bob, Ponyboy was as frightened as if he was at a haunted house . The consequence of this choice was that Johnny and Ponyboy felt guilty ,and they Both decided to run away for a like one million years. Johnny said, “I killed him. I killed that boy (pg56).”
His own girlfriend, Cherry Valance is against it although he doesn’t care and still gets crazily drunk. “His parents let him run wild” and didn’t set boundaries. Bob doesn't work for anything, but he ironically gets everything he wants. PonyBoy wonders if it’s "because they loved him too much” or they loved him “too little?" Bob was also the main soc responsible for the beating of Johnny, and him and his gang was responsible for almost drowning ponyboy which led to Johnny stabbing
