No, I do not think Macbeth had ever thought about being king before he ran into the witches. After the encounter with the witches, Macbeth sent a letter to his wife, telling her of the good news. This came as a shock to both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth decided that in order for her husband to become king, they would have to kill King Duncan; however, Macbeth thought King Duncan was a good king and did not deserve to be killed. These thoughts had never crossed their minds before the witches spoke to Macbeth. If he was previously aware of being king someday, he would not be trying to kill Duncan as rapidly as he is now.
