A survey conducted by Deutsche Bank of 270 twitter users found that 80% of the users were unhappy with twitters’ ‘sorting and filtering tools’. The users complained that the twitter timeline looks like a stream of random tweets, even if the user is careful about who a user follows. Its current user count is at around 320 million and has been hovering around this number for nearly quite some time. Considering that a staggering 1 billon users tried twitter and only 340 million are currently active, immediate business strategy would be to not lose these users even if no new users are not being added to the space. A Tangential business goal would be to ensure that any dormant user if logged in to the site finds the product to be usable and stays active. The best tweets are displayed at the top of a user’s timeline when they open a site. This new feature is designed to enable users to keep up to date with latest news, no matter how regularly they check Twitter. Twitter has not explicitly mentioned how it would display the best tweets on the user’s timeline, but twitter did mention that the more frequently a user uses twitter the less content would be shown as part of the recap feature.
As per Julia Greenberg (May 2015) “According to Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, the resurfaced tweets have been a huge success. “These tweets are not only seeing high engagement; they’re bringing people back to Twitter more frequently,” Costolo said in a recent earnings call. “Machine learning work we’re doing for [this feature] is helping us make these algorithms better and driving continuous improvements in engagement.””
