The Theme of Isolation Being alone and separated from others is usually not an enjoyable state. This state is called isolation. According to the dictionary isolation means "The state of being in a place or situation that is separate from others : the condition of being isolated" (http://www.merriam-webster.com/) In the book "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime" isolation was greatly shown and "talked about". Isolation had a huge impact on the character which leads to my next argument. How the theme of isolation have affected the story plot of the book. The impact can be shown through three major events in the story. “It was 7 minutes after midnight. The dog was lying on the grass in the middle of the lawn in front of Ms. Shear’s house.” -Haddon, 1. This quote is the beginning of the whole story. If Christopher did not go out seven minutes after midnight, this whole story might not have even existed. Going out late at night is not what most teenagers do, but for Christopher, it is a common activity that he does almost everyday. Because of what isolation have done to him, he like going out in midnight so that there are no one on the streets and he can be alone or in a state of being isolated. And this is the reason why he went out seven minutes after midnight leading to the beginning of the story. “What in fuck’s name have you done to my dog?” -Haddon, 4. This is a question asked by Mrs. Shears that Christopher did not answer throughout the whole book because of what isolation have done to him, causing him not liking communicating and talking with others. Mrs. Shears got mad at Christopher because she thought Christopher is the one that killed the dog, but he is actually not. Christopher was just hugging the dog because he likes dogs. This is shown not just in the two paragraphs above how everything is surrounding the theme of isolation. As a matter of fact, this is also shown through different quotes from the book. “ Talking to strangers is not something I usually do. I do not like talking to strangers.” -Haddon,34. This quote on page 34 states how Christopher does not like talking to strangers. But as the story plot goes on, Christopher improves as in he started to talk to stranger. With this start, Christopher gets into a good cycle for the more he communicates to others the easier it will be for him to understand others. As a result over time, he will get out of the state of being isolated and the concept of communication will come to be a daily life routine. This shows Christopher’s experience from isolated to open, in other words this shows how the story is surrounding the theme of isolation. “It takes me a long time to get use to people I do not know.” -Haddon,35. This quote is from page 35 in the book, where Christopher expresses the difficulties he has to get use to strangers. The theme of isolation is shown in this quote because of the following.
