My First Anti-War Protest / American Pie
The song American Pie by Don Mclean reflects the entropy of the world. In the song, each verse tells a story of how something was once uniform, yet as the verse progresses disorder and change begin more present. This is seen in one of the most famous lines of the song, “When the jester sang for the king and queen..Oh, and while the king was looking down..The jester stole his thorny crown..The courtroom was adjourned, no verdict was returned”. This line shows how order became disorder. Through the story time and time again in the songs stories are told of what was once a figure or place of peace and hope, but then become distorted and changed. One of a senator’s son, one of a millionaire's son, and one of a military son. Each time the man tells of how he is affected by each of someone’s fathers. The senator tells him to be proud of his country and to be a true patriot. The millionaire makes the man give his money in taxes so guns and ammunition can be made. The military father tell him that there is always more he can do for his country without questioning any thought about it. Though the man repeats again and again that he is not these fathers’ sons. He says “It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no no no. It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate son, no no no”. King on the Vietnam War Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival is a story of caution and warning. The bad moon is a metaphor for the a warning sign for the soldiers that death is coming soon. The moon warns of all kinds of possible death, from hurricanes, to earthquakes, to even lightning. It also is a signal to the soldiers to make their last phone calls and make up their debts. “Oh don't go 'round tonight. It's bound to take your life. There's a bad moon on the rise”. This line is the final warning to the soldiers. It tells them to not go out or else death will follow.
In Dr. King on the Vietnam War the article tells of how Dr.King in 1967 spoke out about the issue. Though before that he would explain how he was not proud of the war. “He said the war in Vietnam must be stopped, and he called for demonstrations and nonviolent protest “to keep this issue before the conscience of our nation,”. Dr.King wanted to set a bases in the states so that people saw that peaceful protest were needed in the states in order to spread the word about the horrors and tragedies resulting from the Vietnam War. Both in the song and article, natural forces were trying to signal soldiers and regular people about the terror of war that was happening and getting worse in the near future.
