“Don’t You Think It’s Time to Start Thinking?” By Northrop Frye
1. In today’s world, high school students graduate with no sense of language as a structure because of the absence of using words when having ideas and the shortfall of articulateness in society.
2. Two arguments:
a. “Young adolescents today betray a curious sense of shame about speaking articulately, of framing a sentence with a period at the end of it.” I think this argument is effective. I believe this because in today’s world most young adolescents, being one myself, speak in a way to fit in, rather than speak in a way to be articulate. After understanding Frye’s argument of how, in today’s world, high school students graduate with no sense of language as a structure because of the absence of using words when having ideas and the shortfall of articulateness in society. I have come to agree with what he believes. The main reason why I agree with Frye is because I can relate to what he is saying. When Frye says, “we use the word “think” on so many bad, punning ways.” I feel that I use the word “think” too often when I could be using other words that are more suitable. Also, when Frye says, “Young adolescents today often betray a curious sense of shame about speaking articulately”, I feel that this is accurate having experienced this myself. I have sometimes betrayed speaking articulately in shame of not fitting in with certain people and I know this is happening with other young adolescents having experienced this myself. Another example where I agree with Frye is when he says, “The vast majority of things that we hear today are prejudices and clichés, simply verbal formulas that have no thought behind them but are put up as a pretense of thinking.” In today’s society, I believe that a lot of what is being said by the news or most people is very biased and prejudice and this is important as to why I agree with Frye. Overall, I agree with Frye’s arguments as I can relate personally to many examples he provides in this
