Immigration has been a huge topic of discussion recently. Since the beginning of Donald Trump’s campaign, he has made his feelings towards immigration well known. The first concern of his was getting rid of all “illegal” immigrants, and building the notorious wall. He called Mexican immigrants “rapists” and “drug dealers” saying that Mexico was not sending us their best people. Trump also argued that refugees particularly those from middle eastern countries were dangerous to our nation. Trump later signed an executive order which prevented refugees from entering the country for 120 days and immigrants from seven predominately Muslim nations out for three months. This travel ban has been problematic for those citizens who came here legally with visas or green cards because many were detained for hours or days and some were completely stopped from entering. The ban has torn families apart, and has prevented people from returning to work or school. Another major problem is how this is leading to more islamophobia and xenophobia. The travel ban is only increasing those negative stereotypes and hatred towards that group. In an article written by Zack Beauchamp, he discusseshe travel ban and how Trump is manipulating Americans on his so called “extreme vetting” policies. Beauchamp states, “It’s a kind of Muslim ban lite, dressed up in nonreligious language to avoid legal challenges and political blowback. Trump and his team are counting on the public to be tricked, to limit the backlash against turning islamophobia into the official guiding light of American immigration policy” (Beauchamp 2017, 5). Even though the ban does not specifically state that it is a ban on people from certain religious backgrounds, it is implied because the only countries on that list are Muslim majority
