The article “Trump: to ‘d or not to ‘d” written by Mark Liberman is an article that analysis’s President Donald Trump’s articulation during an interview with the wall street journal in January 2018 and talks about the phonetics with Trump’s inability to pronounce some words. Liberman talks about how Trump does not articulate vowels the same way as most people, along with showing visual evidence that he has done and all while supporting his claims. The article has a lot of positives and supporting evidence but who is Mark Liberman? “Trump: to ‘d or not to ‘d” is a great linguistics article with Liberman backing up his claims without being bias and supporting his research with evidence. Trump saying comparable things, and examining spectral variation at the ends of his first person singular pronouns, the durations of stop gaps in relevant instances of /dp/ vs. /p/, etc” (Liberman, 2018). All of Liberman’s claims he had made is back up by his research and evidence he has displayed on the article. Along with it there are several articles which describe similar claims and explanations on why. One of which is called “Variation across English and Norwegian” Which as a section in the book that talks about the different types of English and talks about how everyone in the English language has their own language and how some people make their own rules (Lohndal, 2017). With positives there are negatives, some of the negatives to the article are that this article is short and has a limited amount of information and no original resource to back it up. The site, Language Log, that posted the article has forms for researchers to share their information and their findings. So Liberman filled out the form to show people his findings but never did a whole study on it. Another thing is, Liberman talks a lot about his finding and explains them well but if another linguist were to read the article nothing new would be found out as there are a lot of papers written on Trump’s grammar and linguists going in dept about it and doing harder, more advance
