Physics is Fun Project Doppler Effect The Doppler effect is an apparent shift in the frequency of a light or sound wave (Isoardi, 2012. The Doppler effect occurs when either the source of the wave or the receiver of the wave is moving (Isoardi, 2012). This observed change in frequency leads to a changed pitch of an ambulance that you would hear, as it would pass by you on the road (Boston, 2000). As the ambulance would approach you it would sound lower in pitch, and as it passed you and traveled away from you it would sound higher in pitch (Boston, 2000). This happens not because the actual frequency of emitted waves is being changed but because as the object is moving the waves become compressed but are still emitted from the source at the …show more content…
The ultrasound procedure is used to transfer a picture of your heart or other organ to a monitor so that a sonographer can analyze it (RSNA, 2016). There are three special types of Doppler ultrasound that are used to analyze the flow of blood through veins and arteries (RSNA, 2016). The doctor is also able to see the blood flow in organs, like the heart, and evaluate if blood flow is commencing normally (RSNA, 2016). They are especially useful for finding possible blood clots (RSNA, 2016). Figure four shows a blood clot detected by a Doppler …show more content…
Power Doppler ultrasounds advance the technology of the color Doppler ultrasounds by providing great detail of the velocity of the blood flow, but power Doppler ultrasounds are unable to show the direction of the blood flow (RSNA, 2016). Finally, spectral Doppler ultrasounds are able to show the distance that blood flows per a unit of time graphically (RSNA, 2016). Spectral Doppler ultrasounds are even able to transform blood flow data into a special sound that is heard by the doctor and patient with every heartbeat (RSNA, 2016. With all this data the sonographer is able to determine if all of the organ’s valves are working correctly and your organ’s dimensions (RSNA, 2016). No special preparations are needed in order for you to have a normal ultrasound, but you may be asked not to eat or drink for specific types like the different Doppler ultrasounds (RSNA,
