Introduction
During World War II, Dr. Edward Earle Shouldice served on the Medical Examining Board and found that many men who desired to serve their country had to be denied enlistment due to bad hernias. These men needed surgical treatment to repair their hernias before they could join the army; and as a result Dr. Edward Earle Shouldice performed a creative method of surgery on many of these men. These men were very satisfied with the services performed by Dr. Shouldice, and spread their success stories by word of mouth. This ultimately led to the development of the Shouldice hospital opened by Dr. Shouldice himself established in 1945 in Ontario, Canada. Patients who live further away (more than 60 miles from the facility) have the option of faxing or mailing a completed questionnaire form to the office. Once information is processed, patients can expect to wait for two to three business days for processing to be completed. Once the patient arrives at the clinic to perform surgery, they are checked by an MD to begin what is a four day long process. On the first day patients are explained what the hernia repair procedures will consists of, as well as having their blood drawn for blood test. On the second day the surgery is performed, and patients are encouraged to move around after resting two to three hours after the procedure is performed.
