The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson was written in 1886. It is a short story that depicts Dr. Jekyll, a respected London scientist, who creates a potion that transforms him into Mr. Hyde, an evil alter ego. Soon, however, Hyde takes control over Jekyll. This story explores the duality of human nature. Although it may seem like Dr. Jekyll has Borderline Personality Disorder because of his intense emotions and rapid shifts in mood, a more accurate diagnosis would be Bipolar Disorder, more specifically Bipolar II, on account of his addiction to his chemicals, as shown by the symptoms he presents throughout the book such as his hypomanic and depressive episodes, his ability to control mood and not be triggered easily, and his stability when not having an episode.
