Unit 4 Project DRAFT- Leela Curteman A theme in the novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson is the temptation of curiosity and discovery that can blind logic. Dr. Lanyon. receives a cryptic letter from his friend Dr. Jekyll, the mystery of this letter and urgency makes Lanyon feel responsible to carry it out. Lanyon retrieves the substances for Jekyll, but seeing Hyde is the person that will be receiving these substances, Lanyon withholds them. To that Hyde states, ““And now,” said he, “to settle what remains. Will you be a wiser? will you be guided to? will you suffer me to take this glass in my hand and to go forth from your house without further parley? or has the greed of curiosity too much command of you?” (9.53) Following this, Lanyon chose to see the transformation, which completely altered his life, and he couldn’t believe the reality in front of him and died an unbeliever. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Hyde was first created by Jekyll in a reckless state. “I knew well that I risked death for any drug that so potently controlled and shook the very fortress of identity... But the temptation of a discovery so singular and profound, at last overcame the suggestions of alarm.” (10.57) With discovery so close, Jekyll betrayed his logic, putting himself and others in danger to create something new. Through his recklessness, though, he discovered something new: the effects were horrific and ended up ruining lives that wouldn’t be lost if he didn’t rush into his curiosity and instead took the time to study the
