School Dress Code Reform Dress codes were introduced into schools with the intent to make all students feel equal and safe when they attend school. The objective of dress codes is to restrict inappropriate dress choices and the disruption of class time. In low-income regions, schools with lots of racial diversity, and schools with a high LGBTQ presence, dress codes have sparked major issues. In lower-income areas, some parents cannot afford the required uniforms which causes students embarrassment due to the off-brand clothing they have to wear or clothes that don’t fit. Students, teachers, and parents that are involved in more privileged districts with lenient dress codes are unaware of the fact that millions of students worldwide are uncomfortable going to school because of dress codes. Dress codes aren’t a bad thing when they are used as a tool to protect students. However they become harmful when used as a tool that prevents expression, and restricts clothing because people can’t help but “get distracted” by others’ bodies, or punishes students for breaking clothing gender norms. School administrators have failed to pay the required attention to dress codes and now most of them have become outdated and a dreadful aspect of the school system. If we as a society do not realize that dress codes need to be changed then we will have failed at advocating for the basic constitutional rights of children. A suspension because of a dress code violation can ruin someone's entire academic career. We do not need to get rid of dress codes. All we have to do is simply adapt them to this current society and continuously reform them as society changes. Whilst reforming dress codes, discrimination against different genders, races, sexualities, income levels, and body types should not be a weighted factor. We have changed drastically as a society in just ten years, so it should be mandatory for school dress codes to be continuously changed as
