Dress codes are detrimental to a kids learning environment
Dress codes are harmful to students' learning and should be taken away. Dress codes can target certain groups of people and cause inequality because it can limit certain clothes that are needed for religious or personal needs. Additonally, the students' clothes are not the problem and are not the thing distracting from kids learning. Dress codes end up taking time away from teachers and childlrens learning. Some may say that dress codes help childrens focus but all the evidence in this paper shows differently. Some evidence found on this states “Critics of these dress codes further argue it is unfair to punish girls or hold them responsible for other classmates' reactions to their bodies. The uneven punishment, they claim, perpetuates the idea that girls and women are responsible for their own victimization if they face sexual harassment or sexual violence.(Gale)” This shows that dress codes are targeting girls and making them the person at fault when they are being harassed for their bodies. If there were no dress codes then boys and teachers couldnt make girls feel bad for their bodies that they cannot control. Dress codes should be removed from schools so that girls won't feel targeted or sexualized because of their bodies or clothes. All this being said, it's not just girls being targeted but also people of color and certain cultural beliefs. Another piece of evidence states “For instance, dress codes with restrictions on how a student can wear their hair often prohibit common Black and Indigenous hairstyles.(Gale)” In explanation, dress codes target Black students for things that are far beyond their control and take away their rights to take care of their hair the proper way. All this being said, dress codes should be taken away so that all students feel equal and are able to take care of themselves properly. Another reason dress codes should stay around is that it makes buying clothes a lot easier for people who are struggling financially and would make a lot of things easier on families."Plus, for people who are struggling financially and living paycheck to paycheck it would be nice for them to only have to buy a couple pairs of pants and shirts to get them through the school year. It would ease a lot of the burden on families."(McClatchy)”This explains the idea that for people who cannot always afford clothes it is easier to have a dress code and then their kids will also fit in more. This enforces the idea that dress codes should stay around to ultimately help kids focus
