The song I chose to do for this essay was Finish Line / Drown by Chance the Rapper from his album, Coloring Book. The song is performed by Chance, Noname, Eryn Allen Kane, T-Pain, and Kirk Franklin. The first thing I heard Chance humming, then females joining him singing do-do-do-do-do-do-do. Chance keeps the same tempo as he is rapping his first verse. I noticed that the song has two parts to it. An upbeat part then it dies down, then the song completely slows down. I was able to distinguish that this song was a triple.
The second time I heard some drums being played in the background. At a certain point of the song, there is a breakdown, of the instruments. This break goes on for a full twenty seconds. The women that are singing do-do-do-do-do-do-do, …show more content…

The song has a long duration, compared to the other songs on the Coloring Book. The dynamic of the hums decreases in the beginning, while the do's become louder. I caught that there was an example of heterophony. The performers playing the instruments during the breakdown were playing the same melody with different versions at the same time.
The fourth time I made note of the different ways sound was produced throughout the song. Sounds were provided by a guitar, and a piano, which would represent chordophones. Trumps and saxophones were played throughout both songs, this portrays examples of aerophones. Drums are a perfect example of a membranophone. And finally that clapping heard during the second song embodies the characteristics of an Idiophone.
Before listening to the song a final time, I remembered that this song had at least three credited features in it. The song followed a triple meter. There were examples of aerophones, chordophones, an idiophone, and membranophone. Somewhere in the song the performers play the same melody but in different versions, which is a heterophony. When the do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do are being sung, the women are singing in alto and soprano.
