Drugs. One of the most powerful, yet deadly tools that the masses use for numerous reasons. That is present in both modern society, and in Brave New World’s society. With drugs, in the modern society, people are able to escape and feel better. Drugs in Brave New World’s society, they are used to blind the masses and make life stress free. Why then do drugs serve purpose to many people in both of the societies? Drugs can be omnipotent tools that give the user the facade of happiness. Therefore, drugs are a tool which must be used appropriately or inappropriately, depending on the intended purpose. That may lead to drug addiction. Sadly, people and the books characters both have dependence on these drugs, which causes many other problems.

In Brave New World, soma is the legal and very popular drug, that all the characters use. In the modern world, however, the equivalent would be legal stimulants such as; nicotine, alcohol and prescription drugs. For both realities the drugs serve various purposes, but the social behaviors regarding them are very different. In the book, soma is encouraged by people in able to escape certain situations they also do weird things while on soma. Peer pressure exists in all aspects, even with drugs (NA, 2011). Weird social behaviors are present in the real world, but in the book, there are orgies that are encouraged and loved. “Orgy -porgy, Ford and fun…” (Aldous, 1932/1998, p 84, para 4). This quote describes a situation where drugs are taken while having an orgy. This proves that drugs can control an entire human behavior; especially when addicts are around. Some people and doctors give drugs able to gain for themselves, regardless of human life (NA, 2011). In Brave New World, soma is handed out by the government in return for blindness and lack of deep philosophical thought. This way they can control the masses and indict certain social behaviors. “Some people think that using drugs or alcohol is a good way to relax and be more comfortable in social situations, like at a party” ( Spike, 2011). This behavior is all but normal in the New World State. Drug abuse cannot be controlled in the New World state at all. Drugs can enable choices to be different, ultimately affecting all aspects of your life (Spike, 2011). So, drugs are the ultimate controllers in the New World State. In modern society, drugs can influence people and children to base many decisions on them. Overall, drugs are seen as awesome to all the people who are blind to see the real truth. In social settings, people will always do the things that everyone else does. This type of thinking of conformity is what may control some of these thoughts. The one thing to keep in mind is that in the modern world, alcohol and marijuana may not be the only drugs. Phones, media, freinds, trends,and foods could all be the equivalent to soma; the mind controlling tools used in Brave New
